The Taekwondo Prodigy’s Love-Hate Relationship

The Taekwondo prodigy seized a silver medal at the 2019 Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC). Jorell Cajilig, a 19-year-old student-athlete of the College of Computer Studies in URSB, had gained numerous awards in his career such as:

  • STRASUC 2018 (Silver)
  • Provincial meet (GOLD)
  • Provincial meet (SILVER)
  • Provincial meet (BRONZE)
  • 1st tournament in Rodriguez(KNOCKOUT TROPHY)
  • Cainta, Mayor’s Cup(SILVER)
  • 5th national missions cup in Morong College(SILVER)

He grew up watching action movies. As a kid, this kindled his interest in martial arts. He started Taekwondo when he was in grade 6. It was all fun and games for him then. He never took it seriously until he felt like it was a big part of who he is. Suddenly, Jorell had an urge to compete and continue doing Taekwondo. Since then, Jorell had grown to love the sport and the commitment it required.

He joined the URS Taekwondo team for the experience and exposure. Together with the members of the team, Punelas, Regaton, Tejor, Caringal, Casuntusan, and Del Val. Such exposure helped Jorell develop his overall character. He divulged that “Being a student-athlete is making two full-time commitments, one to your studies and one to your sport. It’s hard to balance the workload of sports and education.”

He also disclosed that “I have a love-hate relationship with Taekwondo. Without it, I don’t know who I would be, what my purpose is. Though it is another commitment that I have to be responsible for. Until now, I’m still learning how to balance both education and sport. I may have to stay up late at night but what pushes me is my love for Taekwondo.”

One of the quotes he lived by is from Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita, “If you don’t fight for what you want, don’t cry for what you lost!”.  This drove him to accomplish and strive for the best when he is feeling down.

He wanted to extend his gratitude and appreciation to those who believed in him and kept supporting him throughout his career. “Thank you for always being there to cheer me up and motivate me to do my best in my games.”.

This is just the beginning of his path as a Taekwondo prodigy, let us keep supporting him as he pursues his dream.
